Assist other agency
Assist other agency records support supplied to another organization. Learn why assistance is different from a referral, a transfer, or a second underlying incident.
“Assist other agency” is a local call or activity category for work supporting another organization. The support might involve personnel, equipment, information, or a specific task during an event. The label does not identify the lead agency, establish a formal mutual-aid activation, or show the final outcome unless those details are recorded separately.
Support can produce a separate record
The organization providing help may create its own dispatch event while the requesting organization maintains the main incident or investigative record. Those entries can document different parts of the same event. Separate agency identifiers do not automatically establish separate incidents.
Henrico County's CAD reference explicitly lists “Assist Other Agency” among its local call types. The type describes why the request was organized; its separate disposition field identifies handling information. Henrico CAD reference
A reader should look for what assistance was requested and delivered. The broad label cannot establish that assisting personnel assumed responsibility for the whole matter or exercised the same powers as the requesting organization.
Example
Hypothetical example: A fire service requests police assistance with traffic around a road closed during a building response. Police create an assist-other-agency event and manage the road closure while fire crews handle the building incident.
The police and fire entries concern one underlying situation with different assigned tasks. Adding them as two separate building incidents would overstate the count. At the same time, excluding the police entry from a police workload measure would omit actual support work. The example does not establish a particular legal authority or deployment plan.
Common confusion
A referral directs a matter elsewhere for handling. Assistance means support is supplied or requested while another organization has a role. The original agency may remain involved.
A transferred call concerns the communication handoff. A mutual-aid arrangement is a framework for interagency support, but a generic assist label alone does not prove which agreement was used. Local support to a public-works crew may also differ from an emergency mutual-aid deployment.
Reading the relationship
Identify the requesting agency, assisting agency, task, time, and linked event numbers if available. Separate aid requested from aid actually provided. A unit can be canceled before attendance or supply information without traveling. When comparing totals, determine whether the source counts requests, incidents, units, or completed assists. The same event can appear in several agencies' logs while remaining one event for an appropriately documented incident-level analysis.
