Overhaul
Overhaul is the work firefighters perform after initial fire suppression to locate and extinguish remaining fire, including fire hidden in concealed spaces.
Overhaul is the work firefighters perform after initial fire suppression to locate and extinguish remaining fire, including fire hidden in concealed spaces. It is part of completing the response. A report that crews are overhauling does not mean the building is ready for normal use or that the fire's cause has been determined.
Why crews remain
A fire can appear quieter while work continues inside walls, ceilings, or other spaces. Alameda County Fire's terminology links the transition from fire control to overhaul and explains checking concealed spaces for fire extension. These concepts help explain continued personnel activity after visible flames have subsided.
An operational log may record several milestones: control, overhaul, and units becoming available. They mark different aspects of the response. The length of time between them cannot be interpreted without the local definitions and the unit or incident being timed.
Example
Hypothetical example: A department announces that a shop fire is under control at 3:10 p.m. Crews continue checking concealed spaces and addressing remaining fire until later in the afternoon.
The later activity is consistent with overhaul. It does not mean the earlier announcement necessarily claimed that every hot spot was extinguished. Nor does the continued presence of apparatus, by itself, establish that the fire was spreading again.
Common confusion
Overhaul concerns remaining fire and related completion work. Fire investigation concerns origin and cause. Activities can occur during overlapping periods, but one is not proof that the other has concluded.
Salvage concerns reducing damage to property. It can accompany fire operations without being the same task as searching for hidden fire.
Reading the record
Check whether “overhaul” is a narrative description, a timestamp, or a personnel activity field. Local agencies may record the transition differently. Use official building-access and incident updates for access conditions rather than treating this operational word as a public all-clear.
