911 hang-up
A 911 hang-up is a disconnected emergency communication recorded for follow-up or assessment. Learn why the label does not prove an emergency, prank, or accidental dial.
A 911 hang-up is a call to 911 that disconnects before staff have completed the conversation or established what assistance is needed. Agencies may use the phrase as a dispatch call type. It describes the communication problem, not its cause: the label alone does not establish an emergency, accidental dial, deliberate misuse, or false report.
Why it appears in a log
A disconnected call can generate work even when no clear request was heard. Staff may try to reestablish contact or arrange a response under local procedures. Norfolk's resident guidance describes callbacks and the possibility of dispatching emergency services when contact cannot be established. That is a local explanation, not a promise that every agency follows the same sequence. Norfolk 911 misdial guidance
Some codebooks explicitly include a hang-up category. Henrico County's CAD reference, for example, lists an E911 hang-up type separately from its disposition values. The type identifies the reason for assessment; a later disposition can describe how staff handled it. Henrico CAD reference
A short public entry may not contain the subsequent callback, location clarification, or outcome. The absence of those details should limit the conclusion rather than invite a guess about the caller.
Example
Hypothetical example: A 911 call connects, but the line drops before the caller explains the problem. The call is logged as a hang-up. Staff later reach the caller, who confirms that the phone dialed accidentally, and the record is updated.
The first label describes the information gap at the beginning. The later note provides the explanation for this particular event. It would be inaccurate to describe every hang-up as accidental merely because this example ended that way. It would also be inaccurate to count the initial label as a confirmed emergency.
Common confusion
An abandoned-call metric commonly focuses on calls disconnecting before answer. A hang-up call type can encompass a broader operational situation. The fields should not be combined without checking their definitions.
A silent call remains connected without an intelligible conversation; a hang-up has disconnected. These conditions can overlap during a contact but are not identical. A welfare check describes a purpose of response, which may follow a hang-up but is not established by the label alone.
Reading the outcome
Look for the original type, later notes, and disposition. Separate telephone attempts from dispatch events when counting. The National 911 Program advises accidental callers to stay on the line and explain what happened, which helps staff assess the contact. National 911 Program FAQ
